You are looking at a Model Y at an American auction. The price looks good, the damage in the photographs is not alarming, and there are already charging stations near your home. It is easy to conclude that all that remains is transport and registration.
But a point on a map does not prove that this particular car can charge there. Before bidding, you need to connect the budget, vehicle condition and charging compatibility with the journeys you actually make. Otherwise, you may end up with a registered Tesla that needs more parts, diagnostics and unexpected charging detours.
Budget and phases of importing from the USA
The easiest mistake is to set the budget using the current auction bid. After winning, payments begin that are not visible in the car’s photograph: handling, inland transport, port services, delivery, repairs and administrative procedures.
Separate amounts into confirmed costs, estimated items and a separate contingency. For each estimated item, record who should provide a quotation and exactly what it includes. This prevents a low transport price from turning out to exclude loading, unloading or delivery to the workshop.
Import phases and costs to allow for
| Phase | What happens | Costs to pay |
|---|---|---|
| Auction purchase | Bidding and payment within the auction deadline | Vehicle price, auction fee, commission |
| Transport to port | Movement from the yard to a US port after vehicle release | Road transport, forwarding, special loading if required |
| Sea freight | Container or ro-ro to Europe, subject to carrier acceptance | Freight, cargo insurance, port services |
| Customs clearance | Declaration and release after document checks | Applicable duty and VAT, representation, possible storage |
| Repairs and adaptation | Restoration and preparation for use in Bulgaria | Parts, labour, diagnostics, calibration, charging compatibility |
| Registration | Technical procedure, insurance and document submission | Inspections, documents, fees, third-party liability insurance |
How to request a usable quotation
Do not automatically treat the purchase price as the tax base. Before paying, ask the customs representative for a written calculation of customs value, applicable rates and the VAT base for the specific vehicle and import route. Confirm them with customs instead of reusing someone else’s calculation from a forum.
For timing, request separate estimates for document readiness, yard release, sailing and delivery. A delayed title, missed loading or unavailable part can shift the whole schedule.
Budget rule: Define the contingency as money set aside in advance for specific unknowns, not whatever remains in the account after purchase.
Include the charging solution in this amount. A car needing further port adaptation is not cheaper merely because it was won at a lower price. Use the calculator comparing an EU Tesla with an import from the USA or Canada for an initial calculation, then replace estimates with quotations and the tax calculation for the specific VIN. Published costs in the documentary diary concern one car and are not a ready-made quotation for yours.
How to choose a Model Y at auction
A good purchase begins with rejecting an unsuitable car, not with winning a bid. Check whether the selected Model Y can be restored, documented and prepared for your everyday use before setting the maximum bid.
The infographic summarises the checks before a purchase decision.
Pre-bid checklist
- Damage and geometry. Examine all photographs of the front, sills, pillars, floor and airbag areas. Look for displaced panel gaps, deformed mounting points and signs of underbody impact. Do not assume rear damage is cheap: it can also affect the structure and high-voltage components.
- Classification and documents. Compare the auction description with the title and visible condition. Before paying a deposit, clarify whether the document permits export and what procedure will be needed for registration eligibility. A designation saying that the car moves is not a technical guarantee.
- Battery and charging. In the auction photographs of the car in our documentary project, the battery was at 56%. This is a momentary state of charge, not an assessment of its health. Request a photograph of the charging port and configuration details by VIN, and record unknown battery condition as a financial risk.
- Mileage and history. Compare the dashboard reading with available ownership, servicing and previous sale records. Check the sequence of events, not merely whether a report contains an unwelcome label.
- Repair budget. Request a list of expected parts, including labour, diagnostics and calibration. Separate visible damage from components that can only be assessed after disassembly.
When minor damage does not mean minor repairs
Suppose the front panel appears only scraped. Broken mounts, damaged wiring, an affected cooling system or missing components can make the repair very different from painting a bumper. Photographs support a preliminary assessment, but do not replace an underbody inspection and diagnostics.
Also check whether the listing shows keys and cables present. A missing accessory may be a small cost, but missing access to the car makes loading and initial checks more difficult.
Bid only when the full estimated cost remains justified against a comparable car in Bulgaria. Compare with a car of similar history and road readiness, not the most expensive local listing.
Transport from the auction to Bulgaria
Transporting an accident-damaged EV is not an ordinary booking for space on a ship. The carrier needs to know whether the vehicle moves, steers and brakes, and whether high-voltage battery damage is suspected. Concealing these circumstances may lead to loading being refused and additional storage costs.
The distance from the yard to the port affects inland transport costs. In the answer about choosing a state and port, the owner explains why he looks for cars near the ports used by the importer. Request a quotation for the lot’s specific location before setting your bidding limit.
The diagram shows the main sequence, but acceptance conditions must be confirmed for the specific vehicle.
- Choose a road carrier suited to the condition. Agree loading with a flatbed, winch or other appropriate equipment. If wheels are locked, this must be known before the truck arrives.
- Prepare export documents. Collect the invoice, title in the required form and power of attorney if represented. Do not assume a scanned copy will be accepted everywhere instead of an original.
- Book sea transport. Compare container and ro-ro according to the car’s condition and the shipping line’s rules. Check whether insurance covers loading, transshipment and road sections, rather than only the sea crossing.
- Track handovers between participants. Record when the car is received, loaded and released. Keep consignment notes, photographs and confirmations so you can establish where new damage occurred.
- Prepare arrival in Europe. Arrange customs representation and onward transport before unloading. Clarify when storage fees start and who receives notifications.
- Receive the vehicle with a handover report. Compare its condition with dispatch photographs, check the keys and visible warnings. Record shortages and new damage before final acceptance.
State of charge on delivery is a logistics issue
Agree the state of charge in accordance with the vehicle manual and carrier requirements. Do not send a damaged battery to an arbitrary public charger hoping that charging will show whether it is healthy. If damage is suspected, the first stop is a suitable workshop, with transport arranged to it.
On arrival, also check the low-voltage supply for the specific version. It is needed for access and system control even when the traction battery is not empty.
A mismatch between names on the invoice, title and transport documents can delay release. Check spelling before sailing, while a correction does not yet require coordination between port, seller and intermediary.
Repairs and software adaptation for Bulgaria
Start with a diagnostic report, not with deleting warnings. The table is a starting point for work, not a diagnosis based only on a symptom.
Post-import symptoms, causes and actions
| Symptom | Possible cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Airbag (SRS) faults | Collision, damaged component or incorrect installation | Inspect and restore the system, then clear faults and scan again |
| Damaged front-bumper wiring | Impact damage | Repair the wiring harness; check connections and affected components |
| Steering wheel misalignment | Geometry problem or lost calibration | Check mechanical condition and alignment, then calibrate steering angle |
| Mobile-connected services do not work | US modem, configuration or service problem | Check compatibility and, if necessary, install and configure a European modem |
| Unknown battery condition | Current charge does not show battery health | Check SoH with the test method, date and conditions recorded |
The order of workshop tasks matters
Before disassembly, save the fault codes and the conditions under which they were recorded. Bodywork, wiring and high-voltage safety checks follow. Calibration comes after mechanical repairs; otherwise, you risk setting up a system on incorrect geometry.
On the project car, Avtokompleks Yanev cleared the SRS faults, restored the damaged front-bumper wiring, calibrated the steering angle and installed a European modem. These are documented operations on one specific car, not a universal package for every American Tesla.
For SRS, a deleted code does not by itself prove safety. The workshop must establish the cause and condition of the affected components. A successful modem installation should likewise end with a check of the services that actually work.
The charging port needs a separate check
A US-specification Model Y should not be assumed directly compatible with European charging stations. VIN, hardware and configuration determine whether an adapter is applicable, additional equipment is required or a more substantial modification is needed.
Use the explanation of charging an American Tesla in Europe to prepare questions for the workshop. An adapter that physically fits does not prove communication support or safe DC operation.
Request a report listing the parts used, settings changed and charging test results. Keep it with the diagnostics and invoices, because any future problem will require clarity about what was modified.
Documents and steps in order
Registration does not fix missing purchase paperwork. Before signing a delivery contract, confirm the document set for the specific vehicle with customs and the relevant Traffic Police office, including the need for individual approval and technical documents.
The timeline helps organise actions without treating a general checklist as a guarantee that your case is complete.
The sequence leading to number plates
- Complete customs clearance. Obtain the import document and confirmation that obligations have been fulfilled. If clearance took place in another country, clarify in advance how you will demonstrate this in Bulgaria.
- Match the vehicle’s identity. Compare the VIN on the car with the title, invoice and import documents. Different owner spelling or a broken chain of ownership must be clarified before submission.
- Clarify the technical procedure. Prepare the necessary inspections, reports and approval documents according to the vehicle’s specification and status. A routine inspection should not be treated as a substitute for every other procedure.
- Prepare insurance. Arrange third-party liability insurance in the manner required for registration. Check how vehicle details are recorded before number plates are issued.
- Submit the complete document set. Organise ownership, import, technical compliance, insurance and identification documents, plus a power of attorney if represented. Bring originals where required.
- Collect the plates and registration certificate. Check the recorded details immediately on receipt. Then update the registration number with the insurer and services you use where necessary.
What to prepare before the visit
Clarify which English-language documents require translation and in what form. Prepare a working folder with legible copies, but do not hand over the only original without a clear reason and acknowledgement of receipt.
Compare your document set with the described registration phases after import. Use the sequence for organisation, and confirm the current requirements for your car.
Do not plan the first journey around a promised date for number plates before document discrepancies have been resolved.
A charging test before registration should be arranged at a workshop or a place with permitted access and transport. A nearby charger is not a reason to drive an unregistered car on a public road.
What to check before a journey
A charging station on the map does not guarantee that the car can use it. For the first route, check the compatibility of the US-imported Model Y, then plan stops according to the connectors actually available and a backup option.
According to VsichkoTok platform data published by BTA, Bulgaria had 2,868 charging stations at 1,955 locations in February 2025. This is a historical reference point, not a current list of working connectors. Coverage is better around large cities and major motorways, while alternatives are more limited in smaller settlements.
The infographic shows the overall picture. Check the specific stop on the operator’s current map before setting off.
Choose for the length of the stop, not just the power
On a European Model Y, the usual connectors are Type 2 for AC and CCS2 for DC. For a US import, rely on them only after compatibility with the specific hardware and adaptation has been confirmed.
Charging types for a Model Y in Bulgaria
| Charging type | Indicative power | Connector | Suitable use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Home AC charger | Usually around 7–11 kW | Type 2 on a compatible configuration | Overnight charging at home |
| Public AC charger | Usually around 7–11 kW | Type 2 on a compatible configuration | Work, overnight stays, longer parking |
| Fast DC charging | Up to around 250 kW | CCS2 with proven DC compatibility | Intercity journeys and shorter stops |
Actual AC charging power depends on the charger rating and onboard charger. With DC, battery condition, state of charge and power sharing between connectors also matter. The advertised maximum does not guarantee a constant rate throughout the session.
For a hotel stop, a working AC point next to the accommodation may be more useful than a powerful charger requiring a detour.
- Main and backup stops. Choose an alternative the car can reach with the remaining charge if the first charger is occupied or not working.
- Access and payment. Check opening hours, parking restrictions, the app, payment method and support telephone number.
- Latest status. Look for recent successful charging reports instead of relying only on an active map icon.
- Record the result. Keep information about measured energy, duration, price and any interruptions.
On this Model Y, the owner has observed 180 kW through the adapter. This is a recorded peak, not a constant 180 kW throughout a 20–80% charge. The answer about peak charging power through an adapter explains the conditions and the absence of measured times for each listed charger. Around 200 kW is his estimate, not a confirmed technical limit.
Plan the route around working, compatible charging options between your start and destination, rather than the total number of stations in the country.
Charging costs and a home charger
A Bulgaria ON AIR article reports an average price of EUR 0.122/kWh and an approximate cost of EUR 2.18 per 100 km for Bulgaria in 2024. This is not a tariff for your Tesla and does not show how much charging is at home, on public AC or on fast DC.
For your own calculation, use the energy paid for rather than only the driving consumption displayed. Include session start fees, idle fees and parking where they are part of the session. This keeps charging losses and vehicle preparation inside the budget.
Checks before buying a wallbox
- Supply. An electrician should establish the available phases, connection capacity and condition of the distribution board.
- Continuous load. Calculate the permissible charging current alongside other appliances, rather than with the household switched off.
- Dedicated circuit and protection. Allow for suitable cable, overcurrent protection and the required residual-current protection for the equipment.
- Earthing and measurements. The installation’s condition needs to be checked by measurement, not only visually.
- Load management. Where capacity is limited, dynamic control may prevent overloading without continual manual current reduction.
The Ministry of Labour and Social Policy electromobility programme document uses a minimum charging-station power of 22 kW, but this is a programme condition, not a mandatory choice for the home. The car may accept less because of its onboard charger and specific electrical configuration.
Practical choice: Buy the power you can safely use and that replenishes your daily mileage during the available parking time.
Use the home charging calculator to check the power you need for your car, daily mileage and time at home. Enter the AC limits of the specific version rather than relying only on the rating printed on the wallbox. To compare costs with different shares of home and public charging, use the EV versus petrol, diesel or LPG calculator with your own tariffs.
For a comparison with this car, use the published charging and cost data. Check the selected period, energy amount and shares of AC and DC charging. Charging costs alone exclude purchase, repairs, insurance and other ownership costs. Make a separate comparison for those in the two-car ownership cost calculator.
Confirm the plan and the next step
A successful import is complete when the car can reliably cover your route. Paid delivery and issued number plates matter, but do not replace working charging and a clear cost calculation for use.
Organise decisions so that every subsequent payment has a basis:
- Set the financial limit. Gather confirmed quotations, the tax calculation and the separate contingency before setting a bidding limit.
- Decide whether this particular car is worth buying. A lower bid does not remove unclear paperwork or battery risk that cannot be assessed.
- Release payment after document checks. Request confirmation of ownership, VIN and the applicable import procedure.
- Accept repairs based on results. Request reports from diagnostics, calibration and charging configuration checks, not just a parts invoice.
- Test everyday use. After registration, make a test journey with the usual load, chosen charging option and actual parking time.
If a session stops, record the charger, warning and conditions. Compare behaviour at another verified point before deciding whether the cause is the car, adaptation or operator.
A purchase makes sense when you can finance the whole route to a usable car, not merely win the auction.
Start with the budget and inspection of the selected Model Y. They determine whether there is a basis for taking on the next costs.
