# Cars from the USA: what to budget before buying

A US auction price is only the start. Plan for transport, duty, VAT, repairs and registration, using one Tesla Model Y as a practical example.

The advice to find a cheap car at an American auction and simply add shipping is a poor starting point. It compares a winning bid with a car ready to drive in Bulgaria, leaving customs clearance, repairs, technical adaptation and registration out of the picture.

For cars from the USA , the useful question is different: what needs to be paid, checked and documented before the car can be used here? The diary of one Tesla Model Y lets us follow that process. It records individual decisions and costs without turning this particular car into a promise about someone else’s budget.

For your own budget, start with the comparison of an EU Tesla and an import from the USA or Canada. Enter the actual offers and expected additional costs. To see what has been recorded for this car, use the cost breakdown. The calculator models your scenario; the diary contains payments and estimates with their status identified.

## What the price of a car from the USA really includes

The winning auction bid is the price of the lot, not the final cost of the car in Bulgaria. To decide how high you can bid, you first need to fill in the other budget items. Otherwise, every subsequent invoice reduces the money set aside for repairs and getting the car on the road.

Separate the calculation into costs up to import, customs payments and work after delivery. That distinction matters both for calculating taxes and for your own planning. A European modem, for example, is not a transport cost, even if an intermediary offers an overall package price.

This historical rate is not a reason to assume the same treatment automatically for a future purchase. Before bidding, request a calculation for the specific vehicle and the rules applicable to its import. The separate entry for customs duty and VAT on delivery can help you prepare your own calculation.

### How to fill in the budget without double counting

Record the currency, recipient and exact coverage next to each amount. If the delivery quotation includes inland transport and sea freight, do not add them again. If it only includes carriage, do not assume that insurance, unloading and onward transport have also been paid for.

Distinguish a confirmed price from a preliminary estimate. The purchase invoice is an established cost; an assumption about repairs behind the bumper is not. Give unconfirmed items their own column explaining the basis for the estimate: photographs, a parts quotation or workshop diagnostics.

For a US Tesla, separate adaptation from accident repairs. Replacing a damaged suspension arm addresses a mechanical problem, while the modem and software settings address a different issue with using the car in Europe. Neither proves that the other is included.

Stop rule: If the available money only covers the auction and transport, you do not yet have a bidding budget.

## From the auction to Bulgarian number plates

Importing involves a series of handovers between an auction, carriers, a customs representative, a workshop and registration authorities. At each handover, you should know where the car is, who is responsible for the next action and which document you will receive.

The purchase phase begins on 13 April 2026 , and the selected Model Y was bought at auction on 17 April 2026 . Auction fees, inland transport in the USA, sea freight, customs clearance, delivery to Bulgaria, repairs and registration follow. The dates and durations are recorded in this car’s timeline.

### What to keep on file after each step

-

Auction selection and purchase. Keep the listing, photographs, vehicle identification number and purchase confirmation. They connect the amount paid to the specific car and show what was disclosed before the transaction.

-

Auction fees. Retain the breakdown attached to the winning bid, not just the overall payment confirmation. This lets you distinguish the car’s price from the fees for acquiring it.

-

Inland transport in the USA. Record the collection location, port and handover dates. Request a transport document and photographs on receipt so there is a record of the condition.

-

Sea transport. Keep the shipping document, insurance and dispatch and arrival messages. The project records sea transport from 13 May to 10 June 2026, a total of 28 days . A separate phase to Bulgaria follows from 10 to 18 June 2026, a total of 8 days . These are this car’s recorded durations and do not include every other import phase.

-

Customs clearance. Prepare the purchase invoice and documents for costs incurred up to import. According to the vehicle customs clearance FAQ, customs value includes the purchase price plus delivery, transport and insurance to the relevant location; VAT is payable on import; and US cars are declared without preferences because there is no preferential trade agreement with the EU.

-

Delivery to the final address in Bulgaria. Record who receives the car and its condition. The handover document and photographs help distinguish transport damage from the original damage.

-

Repairs after a physical inspection. Request diagnostics, a list of necessary parts and approval before additional work. Each change in scope should have an explanation, rather than simply a higher final bill.

-

Registration. File the documents from technical approval and registration. Only then can you close the initial import file and separate ongoing costs.

### Why arrival is not the final deadline

The workshop may be waiting for parts, and approval may require technical changes or additional documents. The unloading date should therefore not be treated as the date from which you can rely on the car for daily travel.

Plan the actions between the main events too: inspection, ordering, parts delivery, repeat diagnostics and document submission. If there is no date, responsible person or document between adjacent phases, that part of the schedule is still an assumption.

## Documents for registering a car from outside the EU

American origin alone does not describe the technical risk. The key question is how you will prove that the specific vehicle meets the requirements applicable to registration.

A vehicle without valid European type approval may require individual approval . Bulgaria’s Road Transport Administration Executive Agency describes the possibility of recognition where technical requirements are equivalent, the need for a customs document for imports from outside the EU, and a certificate of individual approval where European approval is absent. Do not assume that looking similar to a European version proves compliance.

### Documents needed before registering a US car

Document

Purpose

If missing

US title

Establishes ownership and identity

You cannot rely on a complete basis for transfer and registration

Customs document

Certifies clearance of a non-EU import

Registration cannot proceed with an incomplete document set

Certificate of individual approval

Required in the absence of valid European type approval

Registration may be refused or delayed

Technical documentation

Provides information on lighting, glass, restraint systems, emissions and identification

Compliance with technical requirements remains unproven

Damage history

Shows reported events before the auction

More uncertainty about repairs; the report does not replace approval

Check that the vehicle identification number matches across all documents before arranging transport. Different spelling, an illegible copy or a missing original may require clarification. A scanned archive is useful for work, but it is not a reason to lose the originals.

The diary contains two separate costs: EUR 51.13 for the Technotest registration document and EUR 408 for the Technotest inspection after repairs . The first amount is not the price of the entire inspection. Ask a quotation to specify whether it covers a document, an inspection or an additional service.

### What to check before transport and repairs

Lighting and signalling should be examined as equipment with specific markings and functions, not simply as working bulbs. The same applies to glass and restraint systems. The absence of an internal combustion engine in an EV does not remove the other technical checks.

Give the specialist photographs of markings, the available technical documentation and configuration details. Ask them to separate necessary restoration from structural adaptations for approval. This avoids paying for repairs only to discover that components already fitted need to be replaced.

A clean damage history helps assess the purchase. It is not a certificate of technical compliance.

The decision before purchase should weigh condition, required changes and a realistic route to approval. A low bid has no practical value if you do not know how the car will become eligible to drive here.

## How this particular Tesla Model Y was chosen

The choice starts with family use, not with the auction. Owner Angel ruled out the Tesla Model 3 because it seemed too small and low for a family car, while a Hyundai Kona would probably have been cramped, particularly for children in the back. The search therefore focused on the Model Y.

The specific car is a 2023 Tesla Model Y , purchased from Copart as lot no. 47357536 , with 112,673 km on the odometer and front-end damage. It was chosen because the damage appeared minor, the Carfax history was clean and no other problems were visible. No airbags had deployed at the time of purchase.

 Expand photo

### How to interpret the signs in a listing

Minor visible damage is a reason for further inspection, not a conclusion that repairs will be cheap. The bumper may conceal damaged mounts, wiring and components around the wheel. A front photograph is rarely enough to assess suspension geometry.

A clean Carfax reduces some uncertainty in the documented history. It does not necessarily show every instance of damage and does not replace an inspection of the current condition. Compare the report with the photographs and documents instead of treating the word “clean” as an overall guarantee.

The absence of deployed airbags is a separate positive signal when assessing repairs. It does not prove that all passive safety components work or that there are no stored faults. Check the system through diagnostics, rather than relying only on the steering wheel and dashboard.

### What to request before bidding

- Additional front-end photographs. Look for views behind the damaged trim, around the wheels and towards mounting points. Check whether panel gaps are symmetrical.

- Underbody images. The frame, sills and underside of the battery deserve a separate inspection. A missing photograph means uncertainty, not the absence of damage.

- History report. Check that it covers the same vehicle identification number and that the reported events match the visible condition.

- Confirmation of restraint systems and mileage. Interior and odometer images should be supported by available records and diagnostics.

When photographs and descriptions contradict each other, do not choose the more convenient explanation. If a wheel sits unusually but the listing describes only cosmetic damage, allow for a suspension inspection. If that inspection cannot be carried out, your decision should account for the uncertainty.

This lot serves as an example of an assessment process. Its front-end damage does not describe all US cars, and the purchase terms do not establish a typical price. The useful lesson for the next buyer is the sequence of checks, not copying the choice.

## The second budget after arrival

What remains to be paid once the car is here? With a used American Tesla, the answer may include accident restoration, diagnostics and adaptation for European use at the same time. These jobs have different causes and should be assessed separately.

On our car, Avtokompleks Yanev clears the SRS faults, restores damaged front-bumper wiring, calibrates the steering angle and installs a European modem. Repair card no. 181 includes a half-shaft, both lower suspension arms, an ABS sensor and fender and front-bumper components.

The modem replacement is recorded separately on 16 October 2026 . The public price for the EU modem and installation at Avtokompleks Yanev is EUR 300 . It includes hardware and labour and applies to this car.

### From visible damage to workshop tasks

Recorded work or part

Question the buyer should clarify

Half-shaft and lower suspension arms

Have the drivetrain and geometry around the front wheel been affected?

ABS sensor

Is the damage in the sensor, its connection or associated diagnostic faults?

Fender and front bumper

Which trim, fasteners and adjacent components need restoration?

Front-bumper wiring

What has been cut or damaged behind the visible trim?

SRS and steering calibration

What do diagnostics show after the mechanical repairs?

European modem

What communication adaptation is necessary for use here?

This list shows the scope of work, but does not by itself establish how each component was damaged. The half-shaft, arms and ABS sensor direct attention to the front-wheel area; the workshop should record the reason for replacement. A part merely appearing on an invoice is not enough.

On collection, request a diagnostic report and a post-repair check. Clearing a fault is not equivalent to eliminating its cause, and calibration does not replace correct mechanical installation. Ask how the result was confirmed.

### Damage, adaptation and the battery

Repairing this particular collision is a one-off cost for this car. A European modem, software adaptation and resolving regional faults are a different category that may also apply to another US example. Do not assume that every Tesla needs the same set of changes.

The charge percentage shows how full the battery is at that moment; it does not measure its remaining capacity. Episode 6 on Supercharger access and the battery test shows the later check on this car. When assessing another vehicle, request a specific test result and the conditions under which it was obtained.

According to BTA, Bulgaria recorded 28,433 electric cars out of 3,851,776 total vehicles in 2025 , or around 0.7% . That share does not provide an average workshop bill and is not a reason to treat a foreign calculator as a local repair quotation.

Separate the uncertainties: Set aside a contingency for damage and a separate one for adaptation. Release them only against an agreed scope of work.

## What charging costs in Bulgaria

The same Tesla may charge for a few leva at home or several times more at a fast charger on a journey. Charging location changes the calculation more than a small difference in vehicle consumption, so home charging and charging while travelling should not be presented as interchangeable conditions.

At consumption of 18 kWh/100 km , the examples presented by Opel Bulgaria are around BGN 0.20/kWh at home, BGN 0.70/kWh for public charging and BGN 0.90/kWh for public DC, corresponding to BGN 3.60 , 12.60 and 16.20 per 100 km , before charging losses and any subscription fees.

### Charging cost examples at 18 kWh per 100 km

Energy price

Per 100 km

Home charging

Around BGN 0.20/kWh

BGN 3.60

Public AC charger

Around BGN 0.70/kWh

BGN 12.60

Public DC charger

Around BGN 0.90/kWh

BGN 16.20

The difference between the cheapest and most expensive modes is several-fold.

These are example comparison conditions, not a promise of the current price at every charger. Check the operator’s app before the session, including parking and idle conditions. The energy price does not always equal the final cost of the visit when additional charges apply.

For everyday mileage, home AC charging lets the car stay plugged in while you do not need it. On a journey, DC may be a sensible choice despite its higher cost because it reduces the stop. The practical trade-off is between price, time and available infrastructure.

### How to keep records

Keep the energy received, amount paid, AC or DC mode and distance driven separate in your diary. If the charger records supplied energy while the car displays energy used for driving, the values will not necessarily match. Charging losses are part of the real cost.

- Energy and payment. Record the kWh and final session amount, including additional fees.

- Mode and location. Distinguish home, public AC and public DC charging.

- Distance and period. Use a comparable period instead of dividing an arbitrary invoice by unrelated kilometres.

The public charging session entry is an example of an individual session. More important than a single price is whether the record contains enough information to repeat the calculation.

Since the car entered use, the owner has continued recording mileage, charging, insurance, servicing and accessories. In Charging and costs, you can inspect the published data and the period it covers. This keeps the one-off import cost separate from everyday use.

For your own decision, compare charging modes against your actual journeys. A month of home charging and a month of long trips can produce different bills without any change in the car’s technical condition.

## Plan a contingency for each phase before bidding

Before bidding, do not look only for a final total. Look for a complete calculation in which every unknown has a place and every confirmed job has a document.

- Financial check. Are all costs up to import included, and are duty and VAT shown separately? Check whether the calculation uses only the auction price as its basis.

- Schedule check. Is time allowed for inspection, parts, workshop work and registration, rather than just transport?

- Technical contingency. Are damage repairs separated from communication and software adaptation?

- Document readiness. Is it clear where you will obtain the title, customs document and necessary proof of technical compliance?

USATeslata is an independent documentary diary of importing one Tesla Model Y from the USA to Bulgaria, not an average market valuation or a car-selling service of its own. In this particular case, partner USA Auto finds, checks, buys, delivers and repairs the car.

Amounts, timelines, damage scope, registration steps and ownership metrics apply to this car and may not apply to another. Use someone else’s invoice to identify a missing line in your own budget, not to promise yourself the same result.

The public diary at USATeslata connects costs with the purchase, transport, repairs, adaptation and subsequent use of this particular car. Explore the records by phase, then prepare your own budget for a car from the USA, supported by documents, confirmed quotations and separate contingencies.
